Berberis thunbergii ‘Diabolicum’ is a compact, deciduous shrub that offers brilliant seasonal foliage colour in small gardens. In spring, the bright yellow foliage is edged with red tints, continuing yellow-green through summer before transitioning to orange-yellow in the autumn. This dense spiny shrub can be used for foliage interest in mixed borders, as a low hedge or patio container plant. Inconspicuous yellow flowers in spring are highly attractive to beneficial pollinators whilst birds enjoy its dense, thorny cover, making ‘Diabolicum’ perfect for wildlife-friendly gardens. Berberis ‘Diabolicum’ is also a superb choice for coastal locations. Maximum height and spread: 100cm (39in).

Plant Berberis in full sun or partial shade, on a reliably moist, well-drained soil. Barberry plants are extremely resilient and will grow on many different soil types, except waterlogged.

Berberis require little maintenance once established. Trim back the stems lightly after flowering, removing dead or damaged growth at the same time.
