Berberis thunbergii f. atropurpurea 'Harlequin' is a particularly recognisable RHS AGM variety with distinctive purple leaves marbled with rose-pink. Although mainly grown for its foliage, the pale lemon flowers make a pleasing contrast in spring, followed by bright red berries from late summer. The colourful leaves take on brighter tones of red during the autumn months, before falling to reveal prickly, arching stems. A superb ornamental shrub for adding colour accents to borders. Barberry plants also make colourful hedges and attract wildlife to their flowers and berries. Height: 120cm (48”). Spread: 150cm (59”).

Plant Berberis in full sun or partial shade, on a reliably moist, well-drained soil. Barberry plants are extremely resilient and will grow on many different soil types, except waterlogged.
Berberis require little maintenance once established. Trim back the stems lightly after flowering, removing dead or damaged growth at the same time.
