Striking red/bronze foliage sets this deciduous shrub apart from others in the garden. Berberis thunbergii atropurpurea is a very hardy variety that will also withstand being clipped to form a hedge. In spring small but bright yellow flowers appear in profusion adding a magnificent splash of colour, especially when set against the already colourful leaves of this versatile shrub. Plant barberry shrubs in borders in any moist, well drained soil in full sun or semi shade. Grow berberis plants in a sunny position for the best fruits and flowers.

Feed and water regularly throughout the growing season while young berberis plants become established. Mature barberry bushes require only occasional pruning to tidy old or misplaced stems. When pruning berberis plants remove only a quarter of the oldest shoots back to the base of the plant immediately after flowering.
