If you like Dicksonia tree ferns but find them too large or expensive, why not try this new alternative? This dwarf Brazilian tree fern has only recently been introduced to the UK and is sure to be the next big thing for the home gardener. The compact plants are ideal for patio pots and thrive in low light, so they're great for giving an exotic touch to your garden. Young fronds unfurl in a bronze shade, turning shiny green as they open and and reach up to 70cm (28") tall. This fern will gradually form a small trunk, reaching around 30cm tall in 10 years. Although tropical in origin, Blechnum brasiliense is hardy enough to grow in most areas of the UK gardens, tolerating temperatures as low as -5C (23F) but will it will appreciate a sheltered spot and some protection in winter. Height: 90cm (36"). Spread: 70cm (28").

Grow Blechnum in moist, humus-rich, acid soil. Choose a position in filtered, indirect light or deep shade. Blechnum brasiliense is hardy enough to be grown in most UK gardens, tolerating temperatures down to -5C (23F), but will appreciate a sheltered spot and some winter protection.
Water Brazilian Tree Ferns freely during growth, and moderately over the winter months. The fronds may scorch in a dry atmosphere. Mist fronds regularly to maintain high humidity.
