Description How to Grow More Info Delivery

Sweeter and nuttier than plain green sprouts, this bi-coloured variety is a darling on the dinner plate! Brussels Sprout ‘Red Darling’ has distinctive purple colouring which is created by anthocyanin pigments, an antioxidant which is reported to have health-giving benefits. They’re also packed with Vitamin C and dietary fibre. Try these colourful sprouts shredded raw to make pink coleslaw, halved and stir fried, or oven roasted. This high-yielding variety will crop from October to Christmas.

Height: 90cm (35in). Spread: 50cm (20in).

Companion planting: Try growing Brassicas with Nasturtiums to draw cabbage white butterflies away from your crop, and mint to help deter flea beetles.

Pot up plug plants and grow them on in warm, frost free conditions until plants are well grown and all risk of frost has passed. Gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7 - 10 days before planting Brussels Sprout plants outdoors in firm, rich fertile, well drained soil in full sun. Prepare the soil in advance in early spring by adding plenty of well rotted farmyard manure to the soil to improve its structure and fertility. Plant brassicas at a distance of 60cm (24") apart and cover with a protective netting or fleece to prevent attack from birds and insects. Water the plants thoroughly after planting.
Water Brussels sprouts regularly and do not allow them to dry out as this may impair their development. Hoe between plants regularly to prevent weeds from establishing and bring insect larvae to the surface. Remove any yellowed or diseased leaves as they occur. Brussels Sprouts can be harvested from October to December but their flavour will be improved if they are left exposed to the first frosts. Culinary note: Brussels sprouts are suitable for freezing.

Van Meuwen strives to ensure that all its plants are delivered to you in the perfect condition for planting. While the majority of our nursery plants cope well with slight delays in intransit, sadly, the time it takes to deliver to certain locations in the UK means that we can't guarantee this for some of our smaller plug products and tender bedding and vegetable lines, which do not respond well to the extra journey time. So regretfully while we offer the majority of our live plant offering nationwide, we are unable to ship plugs, begging plants and tender vegetable plants to the following areas: HS, IV41-IV49, IV51, IV55-56, KW15-KW17, PA34, PA41-48, PA60-PA78, PA80, PH40-PH44, TR21-TR24, ZE1-ZE3.
