Rated as one of the most reliable Callistemons to grow outdoors, Callistemon citrinus ‘Splendens’ is an RHS award-winning variety which produces dramatic, crimson, bottle-brush flowers in spring and summer. In mild or coastal gardens the lax, arching branches can be trained against a sunny wall or trellis. In colder areas Callistemon citrinus ‘Splendens’ can also be grown in a container and brought into a frost-free environment over winter. The stiff, dark, evergreen foliage releases a delightful citrus scent when crushed and provides excellent all season interest. Maximum height: 8m (26 foot), Spread: 4m (13 foot).

Plant Callistemon in a sheltered position in moist, well drained, non-alkaline soil in full sun. This callistemon is suitable for growing outdoors in mild areas and coastal gardens and is hardy down to 5°C (41°F). In colder gardens, it is best grown in a cool conservatory or planted in a patio container that can be moved to a warm position over winter.

Lightly prune bottlebrush shrubs in autumn after flowering. Reduce the stems to fit the available space, and remove any damaged, crossing or wayward stems. If necessary, callistemon plants will tolerate occasional hard regenerative pruning. Deadhead faded bottlebrush flowers regularly to prolong their display.
