Camellia japonica 'Matterhorn' is a spectacular variety with pure white, formal flowers held on pendant branches from March to May. This mid to late season camellia usefully bridges the gap between spring and summer and after flowering its glossy, evergreen foliage continues to provide a dramatic foil for showcasing summer flowers. This bushy, compact variety makes a good choice for a patio container. It is also perfect for planting in acid borders making a wonderful focal point that will last for many years. Height and Spread: 1.5m (4.9ft).

Camellia plants require a moist, well drained, acid soil in a sheltered, shaded position. In areas where acid soil does not naturally occur, grow Camellia plants in patio containers using a mix of ericaceous compost and John Innes No. 3 and position in dappled shade.

Water regularly until plants are fully established. Where possible, use rainwater as the lime contained in tap water will reduce the acidity in the soil over time. Feed Camellias occasionally with fertiliser for acid-loving plants. Protect plants from cold winter winds and strong early morning sunlight, as this may cause the buds to drop in early spring.

Camellias will appreciate an autumn mulch to protect their roots from winter cold. Camellias require little pruning other than to maintain their shape. Lightly trim stems and remove faded blooms immediately after flowering.
