Camellia japonica ‘Winter Perfume Pearl’ is the perfect shrub to cheer you up in the dark days of late winter to early spring. Compact enough to be planted in a large container, even on freezing days you can appreciate its delicate beauty indoors from a window. Single flowers with informal petals, just blushed pink, surround a boss of golden stamens. Place it beside a doorway, and when the day warms up step outside to enjoy its sweet fragrance. The dense, dark evergreen foliage provides colour and structure all year, forming the perfect green foil for your spring and summer patio bedding. Height and spread: 1.5-2.5m (4.9-8.2ft)

Camellia plants require a moist, well drained, acid soil in a sheltered, shaded position. In areas where acid soil does not naturally occur, grow Camellia plants in patio containers using a mix of ericaceous compost and John Innes No. 3 and position in dappled shade.

Water regularly until plants are fully established. Where possible, use rainwater as the lime contained in tap water will reduce the acidity in the soil over time. Feed Camellias occasionally with fertiliser for acid-loving plants. Protect plants from cold winter winds and strong early morning sunlight, as this may cause the buds to drop in early spring.

Camellias will appreciate an autumn mulch to protect their roots from winter cold. Camellias require little pruning other than to maintain their shape. Lightly trim stems and remove faded blooms immediately after flowering.
