Deep purple flowers are matched handsomely with especially silvery foliage in this popular variety of Caryopteris. Caryopteris ‘Dark Knight’ is an upright, deciduous shrub which is perfect for dry, hot, sunny borders, happily thriving in thin soils and surviving periods of drought. Erect stems clothed in grey-green, toothed, aromatic foliage carry whorls of small, deep blue flowers with spidery anthers which are a bee and butterfly magnet. Flowering commences in August and continues through to Autumn, making this a very useful shrub for injecting much needed late colour into borders. Associates well with Mediterranean, prairie and gravel plantings and its compact form also makes it suitable for containers.

Grow Caryopteris plants in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun. In very cold areas, where summers are cool and winter temperatures fall below -15C, plant near a warm, sunny wall.

In spring each year, trim back the previous year’s flowered stems to within 2 or 3 buds of the woody framework.
