This fabulous summer perennial provides a stunning blue accent to planting schemes, flowering on tall, upright stems throughout the summer months. Later, attractive seedheads form, prolonging the season of interest right into autumn. Flaunting a fabulous airy appeal on slender, swaying stems, this Cupid’s Dart is perfect for incorporating into sunny meadow planting schemes or in bold groups in the border. Height: 60cm (24”). Spread: 30cm (12”).

Sow Catananche seed indoors from February to May. Sow seed at a depth of 1.5mm (1/16in) in a tray of good quality seed compost and gently firm down. Seal seed trays inside a plastic bag or place in a heated propagator at a temperature of 19-24C (65-75F). Germination usually takes 14-28 days. Keep the compost moist but not saturated.

When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant and grow them on in cooler conditions until large enough to plant outdoors. When Catananche plants are well grown and all risk of frost has passed, acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days. Transplant outdoors in a sheltered position in full sun on well-drained soil at a distance of 30cm (12”) apart. Seed sown in February will often flower the same year.

Water regularly until Catananche plants are fully established. Deadhead faded flowers throughout the summer to encourage more blooms to be produced.
