Description How to Grow More Info Delivery
A perfect choice for small gardens, this deciduous plants bushy habit lends itself well to being trained as either a shrub or small tree. Bare, upright shoots are covered in small clusters of deep purple-pink, pea-like flowers in spring, creating a spectacular display just before the leaves start to emerge. Foliage is rich-green and heart-shaped, providing an attractive canopy throughout summer, before turning buttery-yellow in preparation for their drop in autumn. Cercis chinensis 'Avondale' is so compact that it will be very happy in a large pot for many years. This handsome RHS AGM variety is a real talking point, and the glossy foliage offers a great foil for other plants throughout the summer. Height: 4m (13'). Spread: 2.5m (8').

Grow Cercis in rich fertile, moist, well drained soil. Choose a position in full sun or dappled shade. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil to improve its structure and fertility. Plant Eastern Redbud trees at the same soil level as they were growing at the nursery.
In the first few years after planting, water Cercis trees regularly, particularly during dry periods, until fully established. Redbud trees will naturally form a handsome, often multi-stemmed tree. No pruning is required except to remove any damaged or poorly placed branches in late winter if necessary. Cercis can also be grown as a large shrub, which encourages attractive, large leaves but sacrifices flowering. Once established, cut back all stems to 60-90cm (24-35") from the ground in late winter or early spring. This can be carried out every other year.
