Chamaerops humilis 'Vulcano' produces a short trunk from which bursts a crown of evergreen, spiky leaves. This elegant Fan Palm is an especially dwarf species, and its Mediterranean style makes it a fabulous specimen for a conservatory or patio. Mature plants are hardy but young specimens should be protected over winter. Height: 200cm (78"). Spread: 150cm (59").

As a young specimen Chamaerops humilis is not reliably hardy and should be kept in frost free conditions. Mature plants are reliably hardy. Best grown in a container or in a well sheltered border in fertile, well drained soil. Use a good quality compost soil based compost such as John Innes No.2 if planting in a container. Position in sun or semi-shade.

Feed and water regularly until established. Once mature, Fan Palms require less attention and can be drought tolerant. Mature plants can tolerate temperatures down to -12 C if the soil is well drained, however young plants will require some protection during the winter months. Use horticultural fleece to protect pots if cannot be moved indoors during winter.
