Description How to Grow More Info Delivery
An old heirloom variety, Chilli Pepper 'Hungarian Black' is stunning to look at. The tall upright plants have purple-veined foliage that produces attractive purple flowers. Once pollinated you will see the blooms are replaced by tapering peppers that will ripen through to red to an aubergine purple-black. The fruits have a mild but superb flavour with only a slight kick. Use cooked or raw, for creating milder dishes, fresh or they can be dried and used later on. 75cm (30"). Spread: 45cm (18"). Supplied as peat free plugs/9cm pots.

Chilli peppers may be grown undercover in a greenhouse or polytunnel, or grown outdoors in a sheltered position in full sun. Pot up young plants and grow them on in warm frost free conditions. When plants are well grown transplant them into grow bags and containers, or plant them in well prepared beds of fertile, well drained soil. When growing chilli peppers outdoors, gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days prior to transplanting them. Space pepper plants at a distance of 50cm (20") apart.

Feed and water pepper plants regularly throughout the growing season to prevent the flower buds from dropping. Taller varieties of chilli peppers may require staking. Provide a thick mulch of organic matter around the base of the plants to help conserve moisture and reduce weed growth. In greenhouses, maintain high humidity by damping down paths daily. Harvest peppers singly by cutting them from the plant by with secateurs or pull the entire plant when full of red peppers, and hang upside down in the kitchen for use all year long. Peppers grown outdoors must be harvested before the first frosts.

Van Meuwen strives to ensure that all its plants are delivered to you in the perfect condition for planting. While the majority of our nursery plants cope well with slight delays in intransit, sadly, the time it takes to deliver to certain locations in the UK means that we can't guarantee this for some of our smaller plug products and tender bedding and vegetable lines, which do not respond well to the extra journey time. So regretfully while we offer the majority of our live plant offering nationwide, we are unable to ship plugs, begging plants and tender vegetable plants to the following areas: HS, IV41-IV49, IV51, IV55-56, KW15-KW17, PA34, PA41-48, PA60-PA78, PA80, PH40-PH44, TR21-TR24, ZE1-ZE3.
