Holding an RHS Award of Garden Merit, the showy pink flowers of this evergreen shrub have delightfully delicate petals, resembling crushed silk upon opening. Cistus purpureus produces an abundance of blooms in early summer, each one lasting only a day, creating a carpet of petals beneath the rounded, compact growth. Thanks to its Mediterranean origins, Purple-flowered rock rose has fantastic drought tolerance and is perfect for a low-maintenance garden, grown in sunny borders or large patio containers. Although hardy to around -5°C, this variety will appreciate a sheltered site with some winter protection. Height and spread: 100cm (39"). Supplied in a 3 litre pot.

Gradually acclimatise Cistus plants to outdoor conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days. Plant Cistus x purpureus in any well-drained soil in full sun, with shelter from cold winds. Cistus plants will grow happily in poor soils. Incorporate plenty of compost or well-rotted manure prior to planting.

Feed and water Cistus plants regularly until fully established. Pinch back young plants after flowering to encourage a bushy habit. Once established, Purple-flowered rock rose requires little attention except for the occasional removal of damaged, diseased and misplaced shoots in mid-spring. If needed, lightly trim shoots in mid-spring to maintain a good shape. Avoid hard pruning as Cistus plants will not regenerate from old wood.
