Clematis ‘Advent Bells’ is an exciting cross between C. cirrhosa ‘Freckles’ x C. napaulensis. This new hybrid combines the best features of both its parents – an evergreen, winter flowering Clematis with superb vigour and hardiness to -10C (14F). Nodding blooms emerge in November and light up the dark winter days right through to January. Each lightly fragrant flower is creamy white with the inside heavily speckled with red. This strong growing winter Clematis is perfect for training up walls and fences, or growing over an obelisk on the patio. Height: 5m (15’). Spread: 3m (10’). Pruning group: 1.

Flowering Months
Feed and water frequently throughout the growing season. This variety of clematis flowers in late winter and early spring on the previous year’s growth. Pruning should be undertaken in summer, after flowering. When pruning a Group 1 Clematis, remove any damaged or dead stems entirely before cutting back the remaining stems to a pair of healthy buds to maintain the plant within its allotted space. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant in order to protect the roots and conserve soil moisture.
When planting clematis, choose a position in sun or semi-shade and plant the climber deeply in moist, fertile, well drained soil. Position the top of the rootball at a depth of 7.5cm (3”) below soil level, to encourage new shoots to form from the base of the plant. Clematis dislike soils that are particularly wet or dry. Such soils can be improved by the addition of plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost. When growing clematis in patio containers use a soil based compost such as John Innes No.3. Train clematis plants onto a suitable support such as trellis, wires or a freestanding climbing frame.
