Ornate, heavily dissected, evergreen leaves provide a superb contrast with the glistening white flowers from early spring. Clematis x cartmanii 'Avalanche' boasts some of the largest blooms of the evergreen clematis, with flowers up to 4cm in diameter. The non-clinging stems have a scrambling habit which is ideal for wandering through borders among established shrubs, or can be trained onto an obelisk for a show-stopping spring display. Height: 250cm (98"). Spread: 100cm (39").

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

When planting clematis, choose a position in sun or semi-shade and plant the climber deeply in moist, fertile, well drained soil. Position the top of the rootball at a depth of 7.5cm (3") below soil level, to encourage new shoots to form from the base of the plant. Clematis dislike soils that are particularly wet or dry. Such soils can be improved by the addition of plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost. When growing clematis in patio containers use a soil based compost such as John Innes No.3. Train clematis plants onto a suitable support such as trellis, wires or a freestanding climbing frame.
Feed and water frequently throughout the growing season. This variety of clematis flowers in early spring on the previous year’s growth. Pruning should be undertaken in summer, after flowering. When pruning group 1 Clematis, remove any damaged or dead stems entirely before cutting back the remaining stems to a pair of healthy buds to maintain the plant within its allotted space. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant in order to protect the roots and conserve soil moisture.
