This deciduous shrub provides a pretty display of white flowers against a mass of green foliage in summer - but just wait until Autumn when it really steals the show! The foliage turns to fiery pink and orange shades, revealing glowing red stems as the leaves fall. This hardy Dogwood is undemanding and easy to grow - an RHS AGM variety and for good reason! Plant Cornus in a sunny position, in any well drained soil. Incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost to improve the soil prior to planting, mixing it thoroughly and deeply. Cornus sanguinea will happily grow in improved clay soils. Caution: Dogwood berries are harmful if eaten and the leaves may be irritant to skin and eyes.
Water dogwood plants regularly throughout the growing season until fully established. After two years, This Cornus will benefit from regular pollarding to encourage the brightest winter stems. Prune Cornus hard in early spring by cutting back all stems to within 3 buds of the base or to a permanent low framework. Apply a mulch of well-rotted manure or garden compost to the base of dogwood shrubs in spring.
