A change from the usual white Cornus kousa, ‘Heart Throb’ is adorned with pale pink bracts from late May to June. A free-flowering variety, the showy flowers are composed of 4 petal-like bracts surrounding a central boss and will last as long as 6-8 weeks. This robust, multi-stemmed tree makes a graceful specimen for small to medium gardens, its deep green, pointed leaves drooping down on horizontally tiered branches. It makes a superb feature tree offering multiple seasons of interest, the flowers followed by attractive strawberry-like red fruits and crimson-red autumn foliage. Maximum height and spread after 10 years: 2.5m (8ft).

Grow Cornus trees in rich fertile, well drained, neutral to acid soil. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil to improve drainage and soil fertility. Plant dogwood trees in a sunny or semi-shaded position.

Feed and water flowering dogwoods regularly until fully established. Once established, Cornus trees require only occasional attention. Pruning dogwood is best kept to a minimum, removing only occasional damaged stems and lightly trimming those that spoil the shape of the plant in late winter or early spring. As the tree matures the lower branches can be removed to create a clear trunk. Apply a mulch of well rotted manure or other organic matter around the base of the plant in spring.
