Description How to Grow More Info Delivery

This selection of Cornus mas produces much higher yields of larger fruits than the standard Cornelian Cherry and makes both an attractive ornamental tree and a productive one.

‘Kazanlak’ bears bright red, pear-shaped fruits, 8-9g each. The fruits have a fragrant sweet-sour taste, not dissimilar to Morello Cherries, and are rich in vitamin C. They are ready for harvesting in the second half of August but should be left for a few days to soften and ripen when the taste becomes less sour. They are great for jellies, jams, compotes and flavoured vodkas and gins. A self-fertile tree, it doesn’t require a pollination partner to fruit.

As well as providing edible fruit, Cornus mas ‘Kazanlak’ is a rewarding small tree or large deciduous shrub with multiple seasons of interest. In late winter/early spring, its bare branches are adorned with clusters of small sulphur-yellow flowers, just at a time when there is little else of interest in the garden. In autumn, the foliage turns brilliant shades of orange and purple. Height: 6m (20'). Spread: 4m (13').

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

Grow in full sun or partial shade in any moist but well-drained soil.
Feed and water flowering dogwoods regularly until fully established. Once established, Cornus trees require only occasional attention. Pruning dogwood is best kept to a minimum, removing only occasional damaged stems and lightly trimming those that spoil the shape of the plant in late winter or early spring. As the tree matures the lower branches can be removed to create a clear trunk. Apply a mulch of well rotted manure or other organic matter around the base of the plant in spring.

Van Meuwen strives to ensure that all its plants are delivered to you in the perfect condition for planting. While the majority of our nursery plants cope well with slight delays in intransit, sadly, the time it takes to deliver to certain locations in the UK means that we can't guarantee this for some of our smaller plug products and tender bedding and vegetable lines, which do not respond well to the extra journey time. So regretfully while we offer the majority of our live plant offering nationwide, we are unable to ship plugs, begging plants and tender vegetable plants to the following areas: HS, IV41-IV49, IV51, IV55-56, KW15-KW17, PA34, PA41-48, PA60-PA78, PA80, PH40-PH44, TR21-TR24, ZE1-ZE3.
