Dogwoods are unremarkable in summer, making excellent background plants. That all changes in Autumn! Their green foliage turns a blaze of red, orange and gold, before falling to reveal glowing stems that create an inferno of colour. Plant this hardy, reliable Cornus ‘Winter Stems Collection’ in a sunny spot. Perfect for adding colour to borders, woodland areas and winter gardens. Height and spread: 3m (10') (if left unpruned).

  • Collection comprises:
  • Cornus alba 'Sibirica' - Foliage turns to fiery pink and orange shades, revealing glowing red stems as the leaves fall.
  • Cornus sanguinea 'Midwinter Fire' - A twiggy blaze in winter, graduating from gold at the base of the plant, through pink, to bright red at the stem tips.
  • Cornus sericea 'Flaviramea'- Grown for its golden green winter stems that make a colourful feature in winter.

Caution: Dogwood berries are harmful if eaten and the leaves may be irritant to skin and eyes. Plant Cornus in a sunny position, in any well drained soil. Incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost to improve the soil prior to planting, mixing it thoroughly and deeply. Cornus will happily grow in improved clay soils.
Water dogwood plants regularly throughout the growing season until fully established. After two years, Cornus will benefit from regular pollarding to encourage the brightest winter stems. Prune Cornus hard in early spring by cutting back all stems to within 3 buds of the base or to a permanent low framework. Apply a mulch of well-rotted manure or garden compost to the base of dogwood shrubs in spring.
