Description How to Grow More Info Delivery
Cotinus coggygria 'Royal Purple' produces rounded, rich purple leaves which take on a fantastic red colouring in autumn. In summer, large, wispy clusters of pink flowers appear which take on a tan colour in autumn, and give rise to the common name Smoke Bush, or Smoke Tree. Deservedly popular, this large deciduous shrub grows well in almost any soil and requires little pruning. Alternatively it can be pruned hard every few years to produce a smaller shrub with larger, attractive leaves. Awarded an RHS AGM, Cotinus coggygria 'Royal Purple' is excellent for shrub borders, low maintenance gardens or grown as a specimen shrub. Height and spread: 5m (16').

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

Flowering Months
Feed and water Smoke Bushes regularly until fully established. Prune Cotinus in late winter whilst dormant, removing any dead, diseased or damaged growth and trimming to maintain their shape. Alternatively, to produce larger, showier foliage, Cotinus plants may be cut back to within 2 or 3 buds from the base of the plant. Mulch with compost or well rotted manure after planting taking care not to mound it up around the stem.
Grow Cotinus plants in moderately fertile, well drained soil in sun or partial shade. Purple leaved Cotinus are at their best when grown in full sun.
