If purple and gold Crocus feel a little ordinary then take a look at Crocus olivieri subsp. balansae 'Orange Monarch'. This orange flowered variety boasts tawny outer petals, striped with dark veins that creates an unusual, feathered appearance. They may look a little different, but they are just as easy to grow as any other variety. Plant them in large groups beneath deciduous trees and shrubs or carpet the front of borders with their dazzling display in late winter. They make a great choice for a window box or patio pot too! Height: 10cm (4"). Spread: 5cm (2").

Grow crocus in any well drained garden soil in sun or semi shade. Spring flowering crocus bulbs should be planted during the autumn, in large clumps at a depth of 10cm (4") and at a distance of 7cm (3") apart. Alternatively grow them in containers or naturalised in grass.
Allow the strap like foliage to die back naturally after flowering. Avoid mowing areas of grass where crocus are naturalised until they have completely died back.
