Delicate, lightly scented flowers with reflexed petals appear in autumn; often before the attractive leaves have emerged. The heart shaped foliage that follows is marbled and patterned in shades of silver and green, often with a purple underside. A delightful groundcover plant for rockeries and woodland gardens where it will self seed to create a carpet of foliage from autumn to spring, before the foliage dies back in summer. Height: 10cm (4"). Spread: 15cm (6").

Caution: Harmful if eaten. Cyclamen grows best in the dappled shade of trees and shrubs. When planting Cyclamen it is important to plant corms the correct way up. The topside of the corm has a rough centre with old stems and roots protruding from it, while the bottom is smoother and rounded. They prefer a well drained soil that is rich in organic matter, so add some well rotted garden compost and grit to the soil prior to planting. Plant the corms at a depth of just 3cm (1").
In autumn allow the foliage to die back naturally as this will help to feed the corms for the following year. Mulch corms with leaf mould to protect them from hard frosts. Where cyclamen are grown under deciduous trees, simply leave a covering of fallen leaves over the top of the corms.
