They make outstanding cut flowers, with long, strong stems and an impressive vase life. They perform equally well in the garden, striking a pose at the back of borders in a symphony of colour that lasts until the first frosts.

Dahlia ‘Penhill Watermelon’ - A frothing, floaty bloom of quilled petals with a pale lemon heart blending into watermelon pink and peach. Almost good enough to eat! Bloom size: 20-25cm.
Dahlia ‘Red Labyrinth’ – Huge blooms with curving petals in a rich, brilliant red.
Dahlia ‘Kelvin Floodlight’ - Aptly named, these enormous, dinner plate, sulphur-yellow blooms create luminous halos in the border.
Dahlia ‘Akita’ – Extraordinary, chrysanthemum-like flowers composed of burnt orange petals with crimson red and yellow highlights.
Dahlia ‘Vancouver’ - 20-25cm wide blooms in blue-violet speckled with delicate white tips.
Dahlia ‘Thomas Edison’ - One for purple-lovers boasting massive dinnerplate heads in deep magenta purple.

Plant Dahlia tubers outdoors in April after all risk of frost has passed. Choose a sunny position in moist well drained soil. Prepare the soil by digging in plenty of well rotted manure or compost. Plant tubers at a depth of 15cm (6") and water well. Alternatively, start tubers into growth in pots of compost in a frost free greenhouse. Transplant them into their final positions outdoors in June.

Feed and water dahlias regularly throughout the growing season. While plants are still young, pinch out the growing tip of each stem to encourage bushier growth and masses of flowers. As dahlias develop, the taller varieties will require staking with garden canes to support their stems. Deadhead faded dahlia flowers to encourage more blooms to be produced. With the first autumn frosts, remove tubers from their growing positions and trim away the old stems to 5cm above the tuber. Clean any remaining soil from the tubers and store them over winter in trays of peat or sand, in a cool but frost free position. The tubers can be planted the following spring for another fabulous display.
