Description How to Grow Delivery

We don’t normally associate ferns with colour, but Doodia aspera ‘Rough Ruby’ not only delivers interesting foliage shape and texture but wonderful colour too. In spring, its rough-textured fronds emerge in glowing shades of reddish-pink, making a vibrant background to spring flowers. The fronds mature to dark green and are evergreen in mild areas. Doodia aspera ‘Rough Ruby’ is half-hardy and will require some protection in areas with cold winters. Alternatively, grow it in a trough as part of a fern collection and move it into a sheltered position over winter. Height and spread: 50cm (20in).

Plant in partial to full shade in fertile, moist soil in a sheltered position or in a container that can be moved into a frost-free position over winter. Ferns prefer a soil that is rich in organic matter so add some well rotted manure or garden compost to the soil prior to planting. Will cope with short periods of drought. Not fully hardy - plant can withstand temperatures down to -5°C (23°F). Cover crowns with mulch during winter to protect them from frost.
