Tightly curled crosiers, covered in shaggy black hairs, unfurl into arching, bright green fronds with black, scaly stems. Dryopteris atrata is perfect for a woodland border or shady patio pot, even coping with full shade. A relatively large fern it forms a robust clump making a handsome structural plant that provides lush, green foliage in dark corners. Semi-evergreen. Height and spread: 60-80cm (24-80in).

Plant in partial shade in fertile, moist, acid or neutral, soil. Ferns prefer a soil that is rich in organic matter so add some well rotted manure or garden compost to the soil prior to planting. Dryopteris atrata naturally grows by water and enjoys reliably moist soil.

Feed and water ferns regularly until they are fully established. Leave old fronds on over winter to protect the crown. Apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost around each plant in spring.
