Dryopteris kuratae is a large, hardy evergreen fern from East Asia that offers lush greenery and foliage texture throughout the year. The coiled croziers are distinguished by their black scales, unfurling into glossy green fronds with serrated edges. Easy to grow and hardy to minus 20C. Height: 60 - 80 cm (24-31in). Spread: 60 cm (24in).

Plant in partial shade in fertile, moist, acid or neutral, soil. Ferns prefer a soil that is rich in organic matter so add some well rotted manure or garden compost to the soil prior to planting.

Feed and water ferns regularly until they are fully established. Leave old fronds on over winter to protect the crown. Apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost around each plant in spring.
