A low-growing, evergreen shrub, Erica carnea provides excellent groundcover. Its lateral, spreading growth easily colonises dry banks and walls and provides all-year-round texture and colour at the front of borders. Mats of needle-like, green foliage produce masses of small pink flowers from early to mid spring, providing a rich source of nectar for pollinating insects. Its petite size makes it ideal for small gardens and courtyards or planted into a patio trough. Height: 15cm (6"). Spread: 45cm (18").

Unlike some heathers, Erica carnea cultivars are lime tolerant and will grow equally well in almost any garden soil. Grow Erica carnea in well-drained soil in full sun. When growing in containers, use a good quality soil-based potting mix.

During the growing season, water Erica plants regularly and feed with a half-strength liquid fertiliser every 4 weeks. After flowering, trim Heathers with shears to remove faded blooms and promote bushy growth.
