Escallonia 'Glowing Embers' offers a golden splash of colourful foliage, blushed with orange-red before maturing to mid green. Through summer, its glossy yellow leaves and red stems play host to clusters of contrasting dark pink, tubular flowers that attract pollinators.

This trouble-free evergreen shrub provides year-round interest and versatility – suiting border plantings or growing as a medium-height hedge. It will also cope with challenging situations such as exposed coastal gardens. Ultimate height: 1m (3.2ft) Ultimate spread: 1.2m (4ft).

Grow Escallonia plants on fertile, well-drained soil in full sun with shelter from cold, drying winds.

Deadhead Escallonia plants regularly to encourage further blooms. During late spring, lightly cut back any shoots that spoil the symmetry of the plant. Mulch the plants with well-rotted compost or manure around the base of the plant at the same time.
