Escallonia laevis 'Gold Ellen' is a resilient evergreen shrub that offers a bright splash of golden foliage paired with pretty pink flowers. Golden yellow to bright yellow-green leaves are splashed with dark green in the centre. In mid to late summer, clusters of tubular pink flowers appear, their fragrance luring pollinators.

This versatile, low maintenance shrub is trouble free, tolerating coastal exposure and poor soils. Plants are suitable for hedging and screening as well as making a vibrant backdrop for mixed borders. Ultimate height and spread: 1.5m to 2.5m (4.9 to 8.2ft).

Grow Escallonia plants on fertile, well-drained soil in full sun with shelter from cold, drying winds.

Deadhead Escallonia plants regularly to encourage further blooms. During late spring, lightly cut back any shoots that spoil the symmetry of the plant. Mulch the plants with well-rotted compost or manure around the base of the plant at the same time.
