Pot up Escallonia plug plants and grow them on in cool frost-free conditions until large enough to plant outside in their final positions. When plants are well grown, gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days before transplanting into borders outdoors. Grow Escallonia in any fertile, well drained soil in full sun, with shelter from cold winds. Escallonia shrubs will happily grow in improved clay soils.
Water regularly throughout the growing season until Escallonia plants are well established. In areas with extreme winters, Escallonia is best given some winter protection with horticultural fleece. Escallonia requires little attention, but benefits from a light prune each year to keep it neat and tidy. In mid to late spring, trim or lightly cut back any shoots which spoil the symmetry of the plant, just above a healthy bud. Apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost around the base of the plant in spring.
