Description How to Grow More Info Delivery
Also known as Mountain Witch Alder, this relative of the witch hazel is a compact deciduous shrub with glossy, textured, deep green leaves. In May, as the leaves are unfurling, masses of fragrant white, fluffy bottlebrush flowers smother the shrub with colour. As autumn approaches the leaves take on brilliant red and orange tones, which Fothergilla major is famed for. A neat, slow-growing habit and fantastic seasonal colour make Fothergilla major a valuable specimen in mixed borders, cottage gardens and the edges of woodland gardens. This RHS AGM variety will happily grow in partial shade but the best leaf colour will be seen in a sunny position. Height: 2.5m (8’). Spread: 2m (6.5’).

Fothergilla needs an ericaceous (acid) soil. Plant Fothergilla in humus-rich, fertile, moist but well drained acid soil. Mountain Witch Alder tolerates a sunny or partially shaded position, but leaf autumn colour will be at its best if grown in full sun.
