Description How to Grow More Info Delivery

This versatile native tree can be used as a border shrub, screening specimen or hedging plant. Early spring interest is provided by masses of pendant yellow-green catkins that are followed by a crop of hazelnuts in September. Hazels will begin to produce nuts three to four years after planting if a pollination partner is planted nearby. Upright stems are clothed in broad green leaves from spring to autumn, providing an effective screen. Hazel trees also provide a rich habitat for wildlife, including insects, birds, squirrels and dormice, and are a perfect choice for wildlife-friendly gardens. Plants are easily kept compact by coppicing and the coppiced stems can be used to make hazel hurdles, wigwams and fencing. Maximum height and spread: 8m (26ft).

Choose a sheltered position on moist, well drained soil in sun or light shade. Prior to planting Hazelnut trees, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil. Plant at the same soil level as they were growing at the nursery, and water well to settle the soil. To ensure pollination, it is best to grow hazelnuts in groups of two or more cultivars.

Nut trees do not suffer weed competition well, so keep weeds and grass clear from within a 30cm radius of base of the tree. Water young trees during particularly dry periods until fully established. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the tree. This will help to retain moisture throughout the summer. Plants can be kept compact by coppicing every 2-3 years. Take out about 1/4 of the stems, selecting the oldest, thickest ones. Cut them back to a few inches from where they arise
