Winner of an RHS Award of Garden Merit, this beautiful large deciduous shrub, or small tree, is native to central China and rarely seen in gardens. Heptacodium miconioides produces dense clusters of small white flowers with a delicious jasmine fragrance from late summer through until autumn. The flowers are highly attractive to bees and butterflies. After the flowers fade the sepals persist, aging to deep pink and extending the colourful display into late autumn. This unusual, hardy shrub is superb planted as a specimen plant or as part of a mixed border for late summer colour. Height: 8m (26'). Spread: 4m (13'). Supplied in a 3 litre pot.

Gradually acclimatise Heptacodium miconioides to outdoor conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days. Plant the Seven Sons Flower Tree in any moist, fertile, well-drained soil; it will grow happily in improved clay soils. Incorporate plenty of compost or well-rotted manure prior to planting. Choose a final position in full sun or light dappled shade with shelter from strong winds.

Feed and water Heptacodium trees regularly until fully established. Once established, Heptacodium plants require little attention except for the occasional removal of damaged, diseased and misplaced shoots in late winter or early spring. Apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost around the base of the plant in spring, taking care not to mound mulch up against the stem.
