Hydrangea aspera 'Macrophylla' produces flower heads that are simply stunning, with violet blossoms surrounded by pale lilac bracts. The large, deciduous shrubs have an open branching habit, bearing felted leaves and striking lacecap flowers throughout summer.

Hydrangea 'Macrophylla' is the quintessential showpiece Hydrangea, fitting perfectly in cottage garden planting schemes and woodland borders. The Chinese Hydrangea is a resilient plant that is quick to establish and easy to maintain and prune, but needs space to develop. Height and spread: 3m (10').

Flowering Months
Feed and water container grown plants regularly. As plants increase in size they will require repotting into increasingly larger pots. In autumn, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of border grown plants. Prune after flowering removing any rubbing, damaged or diseased stems and reducing stems to maintain a permanent woody framework.
Caution: irritant, harmful if eaten. When growing Hydrangea aspera choose a sunny or semi shaded position, with shelter from cold, drying winds. Plant Hydrangea aspera in any rich fertile, moist, well drained soil. Add plenty of well rotted manure to improve heavy clay or light sandy soils. Alternatively plant Hydrangea aspera in patio containers in soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3.
