Hydrangea are a popular hardy garden shrub due to their large 20cm (8") diameter flowerheads with paper like petals, that retain colour well into the autumn and the fact that they are so easy to maintain. They can be planted in sun or shade, in garden borders or in large containers. Hydrangea macrophylla 'Blue Danube' has deep blue flowers when planted in acidic soil. Planting Hydrangeas in alkaline will produce pink flowers instead! Height and spread: 1m (39").

Feed and water container grown plants regularly. As plants increase in size they will require repotting into increasingly larger pots. In autumn, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of border grown plants. Leave faded hydrangea flower heads in place until new buds swell the following spring. These will help protect the delicate buds from frost damage. Prune stems in spring, removing any rubbing, damaged or diseased stems and reducing stems to maintain a permanent woody framework.
When growing hydrangeas, choose a sunny or semi shaded spot that is sheltered from cold winter winds. Plant in borders in rich moist, well drained soil. Add plenty of well rotted manure to improve heavy clay or light sandy soils. Alternatively plant hydrangea in patio containers in soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3.
