Aptly named, Hydrangea paniculata ‘Candlelight’ bears large, creamy white blooms which stand upright just like candles on a Christmas tree. Seen against the deep red stems, the white flowers make a fine, late-summer display, sometimes colouring to shades of pale pink as they mature. In autumn the leaves change to red and orange before falling in winter. This Hydrangea is most at home in a woodland garden setting, but it also looks good in a mixed border or even in a large container. Height and spread: 150cm (60").

When growing hydrangeas, choose a sunny or semi shaded spot that is sheltered from cold winter winds. Plant in borders in rich moist, well drained soil. Add plenty of well rotted manure to improve heavy clay or light sandy soils. Alternatively plant hydrangea in patio containers in soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3.
Feed and water container grown plants regularly. As plants increase in size they will require repotting into increasingly larger pots. In autumn, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of border grown plants. Leave faded hydrangea flower heads in place until new buds swell the following spring. These will help protect the delicate buds from frost damage. Prune stems in spring, removing any damaged stems and shaping the head of the standard to a spherical shape. Remove any shoots that appear at the base of the plant to maintain a clear stem.
