A sumptuous variety, Hydrangea paniculata ‘Skyfall’ bears very large conical heads composed of flowers with distinctively narrow, starry petals giving the whole panicle the appearance of an enormous hyacinth. Greenish buds open into creamy white panicles maturing to white and then taking on pink tints as they age. Despite the heavy weight of the supersized panicles, strongly erect stems hold them pointing skywards!  A wonderful shrub for adding glamour to borders, especially ones in part shade, and a stunning specimen for a large patio pot. Height: 120cm (48in). Spread: 80cm (32in).

Hydrangea paniculata prefers a sunny or semi shaded position, with shelter from cold, drying winds. Grow hydrangea plants in any non alkaline, fertile, moist soil. Improve the soil prior to planting by adding with plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost, ensuring that it is mixed in thoroughly and deeply.

Water regularly until plants are fully established.

Pruning:

Hydrangea paniculata flowers on the current season’s growth and will flower better if pruned annually. Establish a permanent framework to the desired height and every spring prune back all growth to this framework. At the same time, remove any dead or damaged growth.

For even larger flowers on erect stems, plants can be pruned back to a very low framework of only about a foot high.

After pruning hydrangeas, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost around the base of the plant. Caution: irritant to skin and eyes, harmful if eaten.
