Description How to Grow More Info Delivery

Oak-leaved hydrangeas have plenty to offer: handsome foliage that delivers good autumn column and bold, long-lasting summer flowers. With Hydrangea quercifolia 'Ruby Slippers' the blooms are particularly large and change colour as they age. From early to midsummer, the flowers begin as large greenish-white panicles, transforming to pale pink and finally deepening to ruby-red. The conical flower measure up to 22cm. The large, deeply-lobed, oak-like leaves turn lovely shades of red and purple in the autumn. A tough and versatile deciduous shrub for mixed borders that offers multiple seasons of interest. Height: 1.2m (4ft). Spread: 1.5m (4.9ft).

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

1 x 13cm Potted Plant (KF3609)

Hydrangea quercifolia prefers a sunny or semi shaded position, with shelter from cold, drying winds. Grow hydrangea plants in any rich fertile, moist soil. Improve the soil prior to planting by adding with plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost, ensuring that it is mixed in thoroughly and deeply. Alternatively plant hydrangea quercifolia in patio containers in soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3.
Water regularly until plants are fully established. Leave the faded hydrangea flower heads in place until the new buds swell in spring to protect the delicate buds from frost damage. Prune after flowering, reducing the stems to restrict their growth to the available space and to improve the shape of the plant. If necessary, Hydrangea paniculata will tolerate hard pruning of the oldest stems to a few buds from ground level. This will also encourage larger flower heads to be produced. After pruning hydrangeas, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost around the base of the plant. Caution: irritant to skin and eyes, harmful if eaten.
