Description How to Grow More Info Delivery
Rich, dark blue centres of this dainty lacecap variety of the popular shrub are encircled by paler blue large florets, the two together show each other off in spectacular fashion. Hydrangea serrata 'Bluebird' also has dramatic green-broze leaves which turn to darker shades of red and purple during the autumn, helping to add yet further interest to your garden. Hardy enough to withstand our winter weather but compact enough to also be grown in a container, these hydrangeas are well worth adding to your garden. Height: 100cm (39"). Spread: 100cm (39").

Hydrangea serrata prefers a sunny or semi shaded position, with shelter from cold, drying winds. Grow hydrangea plants in any rich fertile, moist soil. Improve the soil prior to planting by adding with plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost, ensuring that it is mixed in thoroughly and deeply. Alternatively plant hydrangea serrata in patio containers in soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3.
Water regularly until plants are fully established. Leave the faded hydrangea flower heads in place until the new buds swell in spring to protect the delicate buds from frost damage. Prune after flowering, reducing the stems to restrict their growth to the available space and to improve the shape of the plant. If necessary, Hydrangea paniculata will tolerate hard pruning of the oldest stems to a few buds from ground level. This will also encourage larger flower heads to be produced. After pruning hydrangeas, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost around the base of the plant. Caution: irritant to skin and eyes, harmful if eaten.
