In a league of its own amongst Kalanchoe, Kalanchoe humilis 'Desert Surprise' is a striking and unusual succulent whose scalloped grey-green leaves are beautifully banded with rich purple-maroon. Hailing from arid areas of Africa, this unusual Flaming Katy is easy to grow and drought tolerant – great for gifts and beginners! Watch out for tall stems bearing sprays of hundreds of tiny purple flowers in October. Height: up to 30cm (12in). Spread: 10cm (4in).

Treat Kalanchoe humilis 'Desert Surprise' like a cactus, keeping it on the dry side with only infrequent watering, and completely dry in winter. Foliage colour is best when in direct sun.

Kalanchoe is an adaptable plant, growing happily in average room temperatures of 18C (65F) - 24C (75F). A bright sunny windowsill is ideal, although scorching midday summer sun should be avoided. Treat Kalanchoe humilis 'Desert Surprise' like a cactus, keeping it on the dry side with only infrequent watering, and completely dry in winter. Foliage colour is best when in direct sun.
