Description How to Grow More Info Delivery
Kerria japonica 'Golden Guinea' is a very easy to grow deciduous shrub, sometimes called the 'Japanese Rose'. The original cultivar was discovered by William Kerr, a young Kew gardener who had been employed by the East India Company in 1804 to search for undiscovered plants in China that could be brought back to the UK and used in British gardens. 'Golden Guinea' is bigger and brighter than the original plants that were imported, and holds an Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society. It is a nice shrub for woodland and cottage style gardens. Its arching stems become full of yellow flowers in spring, and alongside Daffodils will fill the garden with bright colour after the bleak and dark winter months. Height: 2m (6',5"). Spread: 2.5m (8').

Kerria is easy to grow in any well drained, fertile soil. It grows equally well in sun or semi shade, and makes a pleasing addition to woodland borders.
After flowering, cut back the stems to the base of the plant. Although brutal, such pruning will benefit the Kerria plants by encouraging vigorous new growth. Feed well after pruning.
