This non-stinging member of the nettle family is a useful plant for adding interest to dry, shady spots beneath trees, shrubs and hedging. Lamium galeobdolon 'Hermann's Pride' produces creeping stems which will readily colonise these difficult spots without being unduly invasive. Valued as much for its foliage as its flowers, the leaves bear striking silver variation, illuminating shady areas. From late spring to summer it bears upright whorls of yellow, tubular flowers which provide food for early pollinators. Height: 20-30cm (8-12in). Spread: 30-45cm (12-18in).

Plant Lamium in semi or dappled shade. Dead nettles prefer a well drained, moist, fertile soil, but can cope well in drier soils once established. On drier soils, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or compost prior to planting and choose a shaded position. Lamium goleobdolon 'Hermann's Pride' can be pruned back hard in midsummer if plants become floppy.

Water Lamium plants regularly throughout summer until fully established. Lift and divide overcrowded clumps of dead nettle in spring to maintain their vigour.
