Elegant spires of pretty white blooms with a delightful lilac-blue picotee are carried on strong, sturdy stems above attractive feathery green foliage. Flowering all summer long, Larkspur 'Fancy Purple Picotee' looks fabulous at the back of borders and makes a majestic cut flower for a vase indoors. Easy to grow, this hardy annual can be direct sown for months of colour in summer beds and borders and is superb for lending a cottage-garden feel. Height: 120cm (47"). Spread: 40cm (16").

1 packet (130 larkspur seeds) (48320)

Direct sow Larkspur seeds outdoors where they are to grow from April to May in full sun, on fertile, light, well-drained soil which has been raked to a fine tilth. Sow seeds thinly at a depth of 6mm (1/4") in drills spaced 30cm (12") apart. Water the ground regularly, especially during dry periods. Germination usually takes 14-21 days. When seedlings are large enough to handle, thin them out to 15cm (6") apart.

Alternatively for earlier flowering, sow Consolida seeds from August to October in 7.5cm (3") pots of good quality, moist seed compost. Place in a propagator or seal containers inside a plastic bag at a temperature of 15-20C (59-68F) until after germination. Once germinated, thin out to the strongest seedling and grow larkspur plants on in a cool, bright position. Over-winter plants in cool, bright but frost-free conditions and water sparingly. Plant Larkspur in their final positions in beds and borders the following spring.

Water regularly until larkspur plants become fully established. Place sturdy twiggy sticks among the seedlings while they are 10cm (4") high and allow the plants to grow through them for support. Alternatively stake plants with bamboo canes or similar while young. Remove spent larkspur flowers regularly to encourage further blooming. Caution: toxic if eaten.
