Description How to Grow More Info Delivery
Known as the Golden Privet, Ligustrum ovalifolium 'Aureum' is a resilient and easy to grow evergreen shrub with yellow leaves, marked green in the centre. A dense growth habit and tolerance to pruning make this striking Privet an excellent choice for evergreen hedges. Golden Privet is also a fabulous addition to mixed borders where it adds foliage interest and the small cream flowers can be allowed to develop, which are attractive to bees and butterflies. Small black berries follow in the autumn which are eaten by birds. Drought-resistant, fast growing and easy to maintain this shrub has a prestigious RHS AGM. Height and spread: Up to 4m (13').

The leaves are Variegated

While Ligustrum are usually evergreen plants, staying in leaf through winter, severe cold temperatures can cause them to drop some or all of their leaves. This is a natural reaction and causes no permanent damage even when specimens lose all their leaves. New growth comes back quickly in spring.

Privet can be grown in any well-drained soil in sun or partial shade. It will tolerate soils ranging from sand to chalk and clay, and even areas of pollution.

These plants are lifted from the nursery field when dormant, and sent to you in late autumn or spring for planting. They often look dead on arrival, but they are just resting in the dormant period and will establish quickly for a strong start in the garden come spring. Set out in prepared soil in holes wide enough and deep enough to lay out the roots. Tread down the planting soil to knock out air pockets. Water well to settle. Apply a mulch to protect roots from cold temperatures. If conditions prevent immediate planting, set roughly into loose soil or a pot of compost (‘heeling in’) to protect the roots. Set these at the same level as they were in the nursery field – you should see a soil line at the base of the stem. Stake trees, taller shrubs and roses to prevent root disturbance.

Privet can be grown as either as free-standing shrub or trained as a hedge. The Free-standing shrubs are low maintenance, needing very little priuning; simply removed any dead, damaged or diseased growth each spring. Hedges can be trimmed in May and again in August. After cutting, the plants will benefit from a mulch, approximately 5cm (2") deep of well-rotted compost or manure around the base of the plants. Caution: harmful if eaten.
