If you are looking for a versatile, robust variety of Privet, look no further than the Ligustrum vulgare 'Atrovirens'. This hardy shrub can be pruned into an evergreen hedge which provides a dark backdrop for feature plants. Alternatively, it makes an attractive free-standing plant, especially in July and August when it produces white flowers followed by small, dark fruit. Although fast-growing, Ligustrum vulgare 'Atrovirens' is suitable for low maintenance gardens and can thrive almost anywhere, whether sunny, shady, warm, cold, sheltered or exposed. Height and spread: 2m (6'6").

Privet can be grown in any well-drained soil in sun or partial shade. It will tolerate soils ranging from sand to chalk and clay, and even areas of pollution.
Privet can be grown as either as free-standing shrub or trained as a hedge. The Free-standing shrubs are low maintenance, needing very little priuning; simply removed any dead, damaged or diseased growth each spring. Hedges can be trimmed in May and again in August. After cutting, the plants will benefit from a mulch, approximately 5cm (2") deep of well-rotted compost or manure around the base of the plants. Caution: harmful if eaten.
