Description How to Grow More Info Delivery
This compact, deciduous Magnolia is neat and bushy with an upright habit that makes it well suited to smaller gardens. The tulip shaped flowers are spectacular in late spring, with two-tone, pale pink petals that are deep mauve-purple on the undersides. Dark green foliage covers the branches, making this a handsome shrub even when it’s not in flower. Magnolia liliiflora 'Nigra' needs little maintenance and performs well in a garden situation, earning itself a coveted RHS AGM. Perfect for growing at woodland edges or as a majestic specimen shrub. Height: 4m (13’). Spread: 2.5m (8’).

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

Height Up to 400cm (158in)

Choose a sunny or semi shaded position that is protected from cold winds and hard spring frosts. Magnolias prefer a moist, well drained acid to neutral soil that is high in organic matter. If you don’t have acid soil, incorporate plenty of ericaceous compost into your border prior to planting. Plant bareroot Magnolias at the same depth as they were previously planted. Backfill the planting hole and water well to settle the soil.
Water regularly throughout the growing season until young Magnolia plants are fully established. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant. Magnolias require little pruning other than to maintain their shape and remove damaged stems.

Van Meuwen strives to ensure that all its plants are delivered to you in the perfect condition for planting. While the majority of our nursery plants cope well with slight delays in intransit, sadly, the time it takes to deliver to certain locations in the UK means that we can't guarantee this for some of our smaller plug products and tender bedding and vegetable lines, which do not respond well to the extra journey time. So regretfully while we offer the majority of our live plant offering nationwide, we are unable to ship plugs, begging plants and tender vegetable plants to the following areas: HS, IV41-IV49, IV51, IV55-56, KW15-KW17, PA34, PA41-48, PA60-PA78, PA80, PH40-PH44, TR21-TR24, ZE1-ZE3.
