Awarded an RHS AGM, Mahonia x media 'Winter Sun' is a large, evergreen architectural shrub. Perfect for a shady spot it also provides a visual delight all year round. From November to March, long, slender racemes of bright yellow, richly fragrant flowers are borne in dense clusters of arching racemes. The bright yellow flowers are followed by spherical purple berries gathered in bunches throughout the summer. Rosettes of sharply toothed leaves to 45cm (18") long are formed with glossy, bottle green leaflets. Height and spread: 4m (13').

Grow Mahonia plants in borders or containers in any rich fertile, well drained soil in full sun or semi shade. Although Mahonia plants are hardy they will appreciate a sheltered position away from cold, drying winds. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil.
Feed and water regularly throughout the growing season until young plants become established. Mahonia plants require little pruning but may benefit from a trim in spring, once the winter berries have fallen, to remove any damaged or diseased stems and lightly shape the plant.
