Description How to Grow More Info Delivery
A towering giant from the volcanic slopes of the Chilean Andes, the Monkey Puzzle Tree, or Chile Pine, is a majestic specimen for a large garden. Sharply pointed, leathery green leaves completely cover each branch, giving rise to the common name 'monkey puzzle' as it was thought monkeys would be unable to climb it! As the tree slowly matures, it loses its lower branches to reveal a highly textured trunk. With maturity, large cones form at the end of the spiky branches in spring from which edible seeds or 'nuts' can be collected in autumn from female trees. Fully hardy, grow Araucaria araucana in a spacious position where its elegant habit can be admired. Eventual height: 20m (66'). Spread: 8m (26').

Pot up Araucaria araucana plants and grow them on frost-free conditions until they are fully rooted into their pots and large enough to plant outside. When Araucaria plants are well grown, acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days before planting them outdoors. Plant Monkey puzzle trees in any moist, fertile, well-drained soil, incorporating plenty of compost or well-rotted manure prior to planting. Choose a final position in sun or semi-shade with shelter from cold winds.
Water Monkey puzzle trees regularly until fully established. Monkey puzzle trees are slow-growing. Once established, Araucaria araucana requires little attention except for the occasional removal of damaged, diseased and misplaced shoots in late winter or early spring.
