The Swiss Cheese Plant is a deservedly popular houseplant but one that can get a little too large for many homes. This little monster is a great alternative for smaller spaces.

Monstera adansonii bears the same glossy, heart-shaped deep green leaves as the common Swiss Cheese Plant, but instead of slits running from the margins, they are perforated with neat holes, making it much more deserving of its nickname. This vining plant will drape beautifully from a container on a shelf, or from a hanging basket. Alternatively, for a vertical accent, it can be trained up a moss pole. Like other Monsteras, it naturally grows within the shade canopy of tropical rainforests and so will cope with lower lighting levels than many other houseplants. Height and spread: 1m (39in).

Monstera is an adaptable plant, growing happily in average room temperatures of 18C (65F) - 24C (75F), away from cold draughts and radiators. A brighly lit room, well away from direct sunlight is ideal, however it can cope with less light which will slow its growth. When positioning this plant, do consider its rapid growth rate and ultimate size to ensure that it is given sufficient space to grow.

Water Monstera regularly, allowing the soil to dry out between each watering. House plants should be fed regularly between March and September when they are in active growth. Monstera appreciates a humid atmosphere - stand it on a tray filled with pebbles and water. As the water evaporates it will increase humidity around the plant. Misting the foliage daily with a fine spray will also help to improve humidity.
